USPS Cited for Death of Mail Carrier During Heat Wave

OSHA cites USPS for the death of a Medford, MA mail carrier in July

According to a press release from OSHA, the organization has cited the U.S. Postal Service for a safety violation in connection with the heat-related death of a mail carrier in July. The mail carrier from the Forest Street post office in Medford, MA died in July from heat stress illnesses.

The man who died, James Baldassarre, died on July 6, the day after walking for five hours (and carrying a 35 pound bag) in 94-degree weather that had a heat index of 100 degrees, according to OSHA. At the time of his death, the National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory warning. OSHA has cited the USPS for allegedly exposing Baldassarre and other workers to excessive heat and failing to implement a heat stress management program. The proposed fine is $7,000.
