OSHA Cites Painting & Decorating, Inc., Levies $460,350 in Proposed Fines

The Long Island, N.Y.-based contractor is cited for alleged fall and scaffolding hazards.

OSHA announced that Long Island, N.Y.-based Painting and Decorating, Inc. has been cited for repeat fall and scaffolding hazards. OSHA has proposed $460,350 in fines for the safety violations.

The company has a previous record of similar fall protection and other safety violations at five other work sites, according to OSHA's Long Island Area Director Anthony Ciuffo, who said the fines "reflect the ongoing failure and refusal by this employer to provide basic safeguards for its employees." At the most recent inspection, OSHA found that workers were exposed to falls of more than 26 feet.

The recurring hazards include not having a scaffold inspected for defects during scaffold erection and before workers began working on the scaffolding. These conditions resulted in $429,660 of the proposed fines. OSHA reported its personnel also found new hazards during the most recent inspection, including lack of fall protection for workers erecting scaffolding, a scaffold erected on unsound footing, lack of eye protection, and more. These totaled $30,690 in proposed fines.
