EPA Grants to Aid Community Cleanup

Communities nationwide will be awarded $62.5 million to clean up contamination sites and protect public health and the environment in the future.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded 240 recipients funds to protect people’s health and environment in local communities. The grants totaling $62.5 million will be divided between these communities to revitalize contaminated properties.

EPA's Brownfields Assessment, joined with Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (ARC) grants, allow these communities to boost their local economies and fund jobs while still maintaining health and environmental standards. Disadvantaged communities, where these cleanup projects are most needed, are the focus of the EPA grants.

"Brownfields sites are community assets and a key component of the Obama administration's efforts to provide tools to sustainably revitalize communities and foster economic development," said Mathy Stanislaus, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, in an EPA statement. "Through these grant resources, local communities can continue to assess, clean up, and redevelop properties to meet local needs for jobs, housing, and recreation while protecting people's health and the local environment."

About $29.5 million will be awarded to communities in need after auto plant closures. Additionally, tribes and small communities in 45 states will receive funds. More information on the grants can be found on the EPA website.
