SAFEX International Developing Explosives Management Course

The Swiss organization's latest newsletter explains that development of the course is far along. Key issues to be covered have been determined, and the preliminary outline calls for eight modules.

SAFEX International, a worldwide organization of explosives manufacturers, is well on the way to completing a comprehensive instructional course for managers in the field. The latest SAFEX newsletter includes an article summarizing development of the course to date, including an October 2010 workshop that agreed on a preliminary outline of eight modules delivered during four to five days.

Key issues that will be covered in the course include:

  • Explosives regulations
  • Basis of safety and good explosives practices
  • Risk management
  • Permits to work
  • Change management
  • Materials management, including disposal of explosives
  • Emergency response/crisis management
  • Incident reporting and investigation

According to the newsletter, "The Course must provide participants with the knowledge and skills to lead explosives operations under their control safely and in the best interest of their businesses. Above all, we want participants to return to their jobs as more effective managers. We need them to say this course was one of the better, if not the best, training/education experiences of their career."

A nonprofit founded in 1954, SAFEX has 110 members in 46 countries. Only bona fide manufacturers of explosives who are involved in the explosives life cycle are eligible to join it.

The organization's XVII SAFEX Congress will take place May 23-28, 2011, in Istanbul, Turkey.
