EU OSHA Seeking New Director

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work is looking for a new director and posted the vacancy on its website Nov. 9. Applicants must be citizens of one of the Member States of the European Union; the agency has a staff of 64 people and an annual budget of 14.1 million euros.

The European Commission will develop a shortlist of candidates accepted by the agency's Administrative Board, and then the agency's Governing Board will make the selection. Known as EU OSHA, the agency has its headquarters in Bilbao, Spain. It disseminates technical, scientific, and economic information on occupational safety and health in the Member States; identifies, prepares, and evaluates safety and health-related legislation; and works with various institutions, foundations, and programs at the EU level, in particular the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.

Applicants must have at least 15 years' post-graduate professional experience, at least five years of which were in a senior management function, and possess a "thorough knowledge of at least one of the official languages of the European Union and an adequate knowledge of another of these official languages." There are 23 EU official languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish and Swedish.
