Bristol Design Build LLC Receives OSHA Safety Recognition Award

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is recognizing Bristol Design Build LLC in Fort Lewis, Wash., for excellence in worker safety and health.

A ceremony at 9659 Perry Ave., Fort Lewis, Wash. 98367 will be held Sept. 17 to recognize the facility for achieving merit status in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs.

"Bristol Design Build has demonstrated excellence in safety and health management as shown by the outstanding commitment of the managers and the involvement of the workers in the safety and health programs," said Dean Ikeda, OSHA's acting regional administrator. "Provided it continues to maintain its excellent programs, after a year as a merit site the corporation will be eligible for star status, OSHA's highest safety recognition award."

Bristol Design Services is a company combining engineering, architecture and construction, and served as the general contractor for the construction of a single-story steel building at Fort Lewis using a green design with minimal amounts of hazardous chemicals during the construction phase. The corporation is a subsidiary of the Bristol Alliance of Cos., a group of environmental, engineering and construction service companies owned by Bristol Bay Native Corp.

Bristol Design utilizes general industry safety standards more stringent than the equivalent construction safety standards. Employees observed onsite were complying with Bristol Design's requirements for use of personal protective equipment such as hardhats, safety glasses, reflective vests and safety shoes. Additionally, employees driving company or private vehicles on company business must pass a driver evaluation and training course. Housekeeping on site was exemplary.

OSHA's recognition programs include VPP for employers and employees who have implemented exemplary workplace safety and health management systems. In VPP, management, labor and OSHA work cooperatively and proactively to prevent injuries, illnesses and workplace hazards. As part of attaining VPP status, employers must demonstrate management commitment to the safety and health of their employees and actively involve employees in the safety and health management system.
