Study Examines Evolution of Fatigue Risk Management Systems

According to CIRCADIAN®, a provider of consulting services and research systems for businesses that operate around the clock, fatigue risk management systems (FRMS) have over the past five years become the international standard for mitigating risk in shiftwork and 24-hour operations. The company has released a new, free white paper that examines this relatively sudden emergence and focuses on the key characteristics of what makes such systems successful.

Making a case for FRMS, the paper describes how a cross-section of industries and companies have come to adopt the systems into their operating procedures, noting, for example, that the American Petroleum Institute has developed a standards document (ANSI RP-755) that makes FRMS the operating standard for managing fatigue risk in the petrochemical industry while the European Aviation Safety Agency has made having an FRMS a requirement for airlines operating in Europe. Similarly, the paper points out, the federal Rail Safety Act has lmandated that U.S. railroads have fatigue risk management plans.

CIRCADIAN founder and white paper author Dr. Martin Moore-Ede says that despite the rising prevalence of FRMS, many companies are still seeking to understand what FRMS look like and how they came to be. He answers those questions by examining their evolution, including the science, research, and operational experiences behind the systems, the aspects shared by successful FRMS, and the five major lines of defense used in designing and implementing such a system.
