NEMA Publishes Guide for Switchgear Assemblies

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published a guide that emphasizes the basic principles and guidance for safety for switchgear assemblies.

The document, NEMA SG 10-2008 Guide to OSHA and NFPA 70E Safety Requirements When Servicing and Maintaining Medium-Voltage Switchgear and Circuit Breakers Rated above 1000 Volts, covers important safety standards established by OSHA and the National Fire Protection Association, NEMA officials said.

“Working on or around electrical equipment is potentially dangerous, and accidents in the course of maintaining and servicing electrical equipment can lead to death or other serious injury,” said Carl Schneider, chairman of the Switchgear Section of the Power Equipment Division that produced the standard. “This guide is based on the versions of OSHA and NFPA standards in effect at the time this publication was prepared. Its purpose is to alert operating and maintenance personnel who service and maintain switchgear assemblies to the federally required safety procedures.”
