Three-Month Extension Allows for Rail Security Training
Part of the Transportation Security Administration's final Rail Transportation Security rule will go into effect three months later than originally proposed, the agency has decided. The effective date of 49 CFR 1580.107 has been moved to April 1, 2009, to give freight railroads, shippers, and hazmat recipients time to prepare. TSA issued the rule on Nov. 26, 2008.
They'll have enough time to conduct training and implement procedures to comply with the chain of custody and control requirements of the rule, TSA said. The effective date of the amendment to 49 CFR part 1520 and the effective date of all other sections of 49 CFR part 1580 remains Dec. 26, 2008.
The Association of American Railroads and its member freight railroads asked for the additional time.
