The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) SafeWork program today welcomed the acceptance by Dr John Howard, former director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, to serve as chair of the Steering Committee for the 5th edition of the ILO Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety.
"SafeWork and the Encyclopaedia will benefit from the contributions of one of the most sophisticated, multi-disciplinary minds of our time," said Dr. Sameera Al-Tuwaijri, SafeWork director. "He is a world leader in occupational health policy and program development."
Al-Tuwaijri said Howard's longstanding experience in leading a national approach to occupational safety and health help ILO, "apply the lessons learned from his nation to many of our ILO country programs, thus improving the lives of our constituents throughout the world." Howard noted, "I welcome the challenge of bringing the best knowledge and practices in the world to everyone in an unprecedented format on the web."
The Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety is the ILO's online flagship publication on all aspects of the multidisciplinary field of occupational safety and health. With more than 1,000 articles, the fourth edition was produced with the collaboration of thousands of recognized experts from more than 50 countries.
"The fifth edition of the Encyclopaedia will provide users with information on occupational safety and health in a highly accessible format," Al-Tuwaijri said. "We hope that it will help to reduce the unacceptable global toll of 2.2 million deaths and 430 million accidents and diseases each year."
