Want to Expand Your Substance Abuse Treatment Services?

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is soliciting applications for fiscal year 2008 Targeted Capacity Expansion Grants designed to expand and enhance the capabilities of existing community substance abuse treatment services throughout the country. The program is intended to address gaps in such services affecting communities of all types, but this year it is designed specifically to address two major categories of recipients: American Indian/Alaska Native and Asian American/Pacific Islander populations (Category 1) and local recovery-oriented systems of care (Category 2).

Eligibility for Category 1 grants is restricted to state and federally recognized tribes, urban Indian organizations, tribal organizations, and Asian American/Pacific Islander organizations, including native Hawaiian organizations, in recognition of their responsibility for, and interest in, providing for the needs of their citizens, and because the success of the program will depend upon their authority and ability to broadly coordinate a variety of resources. Eligible applicants for Category 2 are domestic public and private nonprofit entities, e.g., state and local governments; federally recognized American Indian/Alaska native tribes and tribal organizations; urban Indian organizations; public or private universities and colleges; and community, faith-based, and recovery community organizations.

SAMHSA expects that approximately $7.0 million in funding will be available to award up to 14 Category 1 grants and eight Category 2 grants for up to 3 years. The average award amount is expected to be up to $250,000 annually for Category 1 grantees and $400,000 annually for Category 2 grantees. The actual award amounts may vary, depending on the availability of funds.

Applications are available by calling SAMHSA's information line at 1-877-SAMHSA7 (TDD: 1 800-487-4889) or by downloading the application at http://www.samhsa.gov/Grants/2008/ti_08_005.aspx.
