ISO Chooses New President-Elect

Terry Hill, who chairs the Board of Trustees of engineering/consulting firm Arup Group, was nominated by BSI and will become president-elect of ISO in January.

Starting in January 2013, ISO will have a British president for the first time since 1958. Terry Hill, CBE, has been appointed president-elect and will take that position in January 2012, following the recent 34th ISO General Assembly in New Delhi, which took place Sept. 21-23. ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of international standards.

Hill, who chairs the Board of Trustees of engineering/consulting firm Arup Group, was nominated by BSI. He has more than 30 years' international experience in civil engineering for infrastructure and transport strategies. He is a member of the Infrastructure UK Advisory Council.

"I am delighted to be appointed as ISO president," Hill said. "I am looking forward to further the vital work ISO does at promoting the increase in global trade, trade that the world clearly needs right now."

Mike Low, BSI's director of Standards, said the appointment "is great news for the UK and great news for ISO. Terry Hill will be an excellent president as he guides ISO through the implementation of its 2015 strategy," Low continued. "His successful election reflects well on BSI and our influence in ISO."

BSI's news release said ISO members unanimously supported Hill's election and called this "recognition of the considerable contribution BSI has made to international standardization. Since the London Conference in October 1946, BSI has led many of ISO's most significant committees and has provided the text on which some of ISO's major standards are based, including ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems)."

Hill will serve as president-elect in 2012 and as president of ISO from January 2013 to December 2014.
