FMCSA Shuts Down Several Transportation Companies

The DOT agency recently ordered several bus and trucking companies to halt their operations.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has shut down several bus and trucking companies in Georgia, South Carolina, Iowa, and Massachusetts based on findings that they posed an imminent hazard to public safety. The agency called for an immediate shutdown of the companies for "disregarding federal safety regulations and putting their companies' own drivers, passengers, and the public at risk."

Two passenger carriers and two trucking companies were shut down. The two passenger carriers were: Woodburn's Tour and Travel, LLC (doing business as Woodburn's Motor Coach) in East Point, Ga., and Motts Transportation, Inc. in Cordesville, S.C. According to the press release, Woodburn's 11 motor coaches did not meet minimum safety standards; the company failed to inspect, repair, and maintain the vehicles; and the company failed to monitor and ensure its drivers complied with controlled substances and alcohol regulations. Motts Transportation's owner failed to monitor drivers and ensure vehicles were regularly inspected, repaired, and maintained, according to FMCSA.

The two trucking companies that were shut down were GEG Construction, Inc. in Indian Orchard, Mass., and Allen Quandahl of Waukon, Iowa. GEG's owner failed to ensure vehicles were properly inspected, repaired, and maintained, according to a federal investigation. The company also employed drivers before they received negative pre-employment drug and alcohol test results. Allen Quandahl also failed to ensure vehicles were properly inspected, repaired, and maintained and employed drivers before they received negative pre-employment drug and alcohol test results, and it did not require drivers to turn in hours-of-service records and other documentation, according to FMCSA.
