Industrial Hygiene's Role in Perfecting Your Respiratory Protection Program

Respiratory Protection has long been an important element of many organizations' safety and health programs. With the dawn of COVID-19, new situations arose for some, sometimes requiring the development of new and different approaches to respiratory protection. At the very least, COVID-19 caused many to think about their organization's approaches to workplace airborne hazards that may or may not require the use of respirators.

With the extra attention given recently to respiratory protection issues, it might be a good time to get back to the basics of what a Respiratory Protection Program might entail. Truth be told, many organizational hazard identification and risk assessment processes include typical physical safety hazards, but do not include much about industrial hygiene-related assessments - which should be integrally tied to decisions about respiratory protection. It is now, with this renewed focus on RPPs, that safety professionals should be taking a comprehensive look at the hazards present in their facilities and assessing the programs they have in place to recognize any gaps that could be leaving workers vulnerable.

In support of that, he is a certified ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Lead Auditor, as well as a certified ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) auditor. He is an active (volunteer) member of the ANSI/ASSP Z10 Committee on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, which published a revised ANSI Standard in 2019.
