Flame-resistant garments protect workers in a variety of occupations where there is a risk of arc flash or flash fire incidents. These garments are made from fabrics that can utilize several different technologies to suppress fire. Understanding how these materials function requires a review of basic fire science. The complex chemical chain reaction that results in fire has four requirements to sustain combustion: heat, fuel, oxygen and the propagation of a chemical radical reaction. Interrupting this reaction by removing one or more of these requirements can be accomplished through several strategies. In protective fabrics, combinations of thermally stable fibers, radical scavenger fire retardants and char-forming agents can be used to create materials that are permanently flame-resistant. This talk will outline the basic chemistry of fire, describe the mechanism of each of the flame-resistant technologies and discuss the advantages and drawback of each strategy.
