Industrial Dust Collection: Using Surrogate Testing to Evaluate Hazardous Dust Containment Systems

When manufacturing or processing hazardous materials, a containment system may be required to ensure the health and safety of personnel.  One of the most effective corrective actions to reduce/eliminate exposures per the OSHA hierarchy of controls is to use an engineered solution such as an isolator, containment valve, Bag-in/Bag-out technique or continuous liner technology.  Since there are a wide variety of hazardous material containment systems, it can be challenging to determine the appropriate design for a particular application.  Surrogate testing helps assess risks and drive the decision making process by simulating the hazardous material with a substitute compound.
