Tools for Defending Against the Top Four Killers of Construction Workers

There are several hazards that put construction workers in danger daily. In this webinar, speakers representing CPWR-The Center for Construction Research and Training will discuss, “The Focus Four,” or the top most fatal hazards to construction workers according to OSHA. These four hazards include falls, electrocutions, struck-by incidents and caught-in/between fatalities.  
The program will start with an overview by Dr. Bruce Lippy, Director of Nanomaterials Research, of the scope of the risks posed by OSHA. CPWR has been a major participant with OSHA and NIOSH in the Stop Construction Falls campaign for years and has new materials for the 2020 National Stand-Down. Additionally, CPWR is working with the NIOSH NORA Struck-By Work Group, a coalition of stakeholders, to prevent struck-by work zone fatalities. The materials developed as part of this program will be presented by Eileen Betit, Research-to-Practice Director at CPWR.  She will also describe the first annual National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents on April 20, 2020. Chris Le, Program Manager for Construction Solutions, will follow with a discussion of innovative technologies maintained in the CPWR Construction Solutions database with select examples for preventing Focus Four injuries and deaths.

Bruce Lippy, PhD, CIH, CSP, FAIHA, Director of Nanomaterials Research, CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training
Dr. Lippy is a certified industrial hygienist and a certified safety professional. He received his doctorate in policy from the University of Maryland in 2003. He currently works as the Director of Nanomaterials Research for CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training where he directs tests inside an environmentally-controlled chamber of worker exposures during normal construction tasks like spray-painting and sanding of nano-enabled products. He has spoken professionally on the health and safety of nanomaterials numerous times for national conferences of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Society of Safety Professionals, National Safety Council and many of their local chapters, as well as international conferences in Helsinki, Venice and Dublin. He has served as a reviewer for guidance documents on nanomaterials by the World Health Organization and NIOSH. For the last two years, he has served on a team of senior industrial hygienists chosen as independent reviewers of the use of respirators at the Tank Farms in Hanford as work continues to manage the millions of gallons of waste in 177 underground tanks. He represents CPWR on the ANSI/ASSP A10 Committee on Construction Safety and Health. Dr. Lippy was awarded a Distinguished Fellow of the AIHA at the 2015 annual conference.
Eileen Betit is the Research to Practice Director for CPWR-The Center for Construction Research and Training

In this role, Eileen oversees the Center’s translation research and communications functions.  Since joining CPWR in 2010, she has focused on expanding the role of industry stakeholders in the development and dissemination of practical tools and resources to increase the use of evidence-based safety and health interventions by contractors and their employees on construction sites. Prior to joining CPWR, she was the Assistant to the President of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers.  Ms. Betit has more than 30 years of experience working with construction industry stakeholders to address safety and health concerns and developing related communications materials and products. She is a frequent presenter at industry and scientific conferences, and has co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals
Jean Christophe Le, MPH, Program Manager, CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training

Chris has a Master’s in Public Health with emphasis in Biostatistics & Epidemiology.  He serves as program manager for the Construction Solutions Database and is responsible for helping manage Solution reviews and performing web site administration duties which include reaching out to product manufacturers and updating existing database entries. Additionally, he is currently also on two separate projects: building an interactive web-based system to manage and improve safety climate for construction companies as well as exploring factors that contribute to construction workers’ task demands which in turn increases likelihood for injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
