The Clock Is Ticking! Are You in Compliance with the Requirements of NFPA 652 - Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust?

Many powders in process industry can form explosible dust clouds if the particle size is small, moisture content is low, and the concentration of dust in the cloud is sufficiently high.  Ignition of an explosible dust cloud occurs if an ignition-source with energy exceeds the minimum energy that is required to ignite the mixture at the given process conditions.  Dust cloud flash fires and explosions can lead to catastrophic events involving fatalities, injuries, community impact, facility damage, and economic losses.  It is therefore necessary that effective precautions be taken to prevent their inadvertent ignition and/or protect employees, contractors, the public, and the facility, against the effects of fires and explosions.

The webinar will present a systematic and practical approach for controlling dust explosion hazards based on the requirements of NFPA 652 Standard on Combustible Dust and the recent changes to NFPA 652 as reflected in the 2019 edition.

National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 652 addresses the general requirements for the management of combustible dust fire and explosion hazards and directs the user to the appropriate/applicable NFPA industry or commodity-specific standard/s. NFPA 652 is the governing standard for industrial facilities that manufacture, process, blend, convey, generate, and/or handle combustible dusts or combustible particulate solids.

A key requirement of the standard is that covered sites complete a “Dust Hazard Assessment (DHA)” specifically targeting explosible dust issues.   NFPA 652 also requires that the DHA be reviewed and updated every five years. Other key changes in the standard will also be overviewed.

Who this Webinar will Benefit?

Personnel (e.g., management, technical, operations and maintenance) involved with process safety, EH&S, process design, operations and maintenance from the chemical & processing industries, including bulk and finished pharmaceuticals, chemicals, cosmetics, food, plastic & rubber, metals, textiles, wood & paper and agrochemicals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the key requirements of the 2019 edition of NFPA 652 standard
  • Understanding the Dust Hazard Assessment (DHA) requirement and how it applies to your facility and operations
  • Understanding the practical techniques available for both preventing dust explosions and protecting people and facilities from their effects based on the requirements of NFPA 652.
