Health and Safety Hazards in Construction Recognition Control and Free Resources from CPWR

CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training is a non-profit organization that has been researching the hazards in construction and developing innovative solutions for over 20 years. As the NIOSH Center for Construction Research, CPWR has been a key player in the National Falls Stand-down and recent efforts to systematically evaluate and improve safety climate and culture on construction sites.

There has been much progress, but construction workers still face greater risk than those in most other sectors. Construction had the most fatalities in 2016 and is dominated by small employers and a diverse workforce. About 90% of construction establishments employ less than 20 employees and roughly 80% employ less than 10 workers.  About 30% of construction workers are Hispanic and 14% are employed by temporary agencies, blurring employer responsibilities.

Over the last two years, CPWR has updated its data on the four leading killers of construction workers, OSHA’s Focus Four: falls, struck-by, caught-in/between, and electrocutions. Dr. Bruce Lippy, CPWR’s Director of Safety Research, will review the findings on fatalities and injuries from the Focus Four, but also describe the advances being made to control these hazards. He will conclude with a review of the extensive resources that are available for free from CPWR’s websites.

Bruce Lippy started his career in industrial hygiene working with Maryland Occupational Safety and Health in 1978.  He has a Ph.D. in policy from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional and was recently designated a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.  As an Associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, he teaches a graduate course on occupational injury prevention. He is a member of the National Response Team and has supported the protection of responders during 9-11, the anthrax attacks, Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf oil spill.  He has recently performed safety culture audits for large construction projects, including the first nuclear power unit to be built in the U.S. in decades. He also serves on a National Academies of Science committee on the use of elastomeric respirators in health care.  He currently serves as the Director of Safety Research for CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training.
