In practical use, emergency showers and eyewashes mitigate the harmful effects of exposures to hazardous materials by using water to drench the affected areas of the body. Significant volumes of water are used to both remove any remaining hazardous materials and curtail the effects of contact to that point.
Over the years, the largest challenge facing designers and specifying engineers has been providing ready access to emergency showers and eyewashes. The less time it takes to get to the emergency equipment the better. So, placement in larger and much more complex plant operations has been a continuing concern. Advancements, like dispersed location of eyewashes/showers with centralized activation monitoring, have helped.
More recently, attention has been focused on the effects of exposure to the high volumes of water used in eyewashes and drench showers. Contact with most of the hazardous materials requiring emergency flushing requires at least 15 minutes of immediate and constant eyewash or shower use. The combined effects of tap water temperatures usually being far below body temperature and the increased cooling effects of moving water passing over affected body parts can readily lead to hypothermia. As a result, more and more companies are upgrading their emergency equipment to include tempered water. By using "tepid" water, we can easily allow for the full 15 minutes of eyewash or shower exposure needed to assure effectiveness, without risking hypothermia.
