How the partnership came together and what it means to OSHA, MCC and the workers onsite.

Manhattan Construction Company is the construction manager for the Globe Life Field project, a 1.7 million-square-foot project in Arlington, Texas, that includes construction of a new 40,000-seat baseball park with a retractable roof and a multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club and the City of Arlington. Manhattan and OSHA signed a partnership in July 2018 to help protect approximately 1,000 workers during the construction, with the stadium planned to be completed by the team’s March 2020 opening day. The partnership is focused on reducing and preventing exposure to construction hazards and promoting communication between contractors and subcontractors to improve safety and health during the construction.

10:30 am - 11:30 am Obstacles to Construction Site Safety Training is the number one solution for curing the ignorance of construction safety (some workers just do not know how to work safely), indifference to correcting observed and reported hazards, and indifference that turns into intentional disregard of the OSHA requirements. This session will cover OSHA construction industry regulations, the leading causes of construction fatalities in Texas and nationally, and how to overcome the lack of education and training, indifference (poor attitude or lack of experience), and intentional acts that increase risks on the job site. The presenter will recommend that the architects and engineers who perform construction administration services should be OSHA trained and report any hazards they observe.
10:30 am - 11:30 am Fall Protection Equipment is Great—Unless You Misuse It: Tips, Tricks & Pitfalls to Watch For

Fall protection equipment is the most visible aspect of a fall protection program, and it can be the most costly as well. Unfortunately, these investments can be essentially poured down the drain when workers misuse, “cheat,” or ignore the intended use of the equipment. This presentation covers some of the most common fall protection equipment misuse topics, including best practices for leading edge work. After showing what the misuse looks like, the presenter will provide recommendations on how to overcome these challenges on the job site.

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm The Hazard Continuum for Safety Training This session will discuss construction safety hazards and the various approaches to training based on the different levels of the hazard continuum. These levels are determined by the type of hazard and the experience and position of the worker. The levels can range from basic hazard awareness, to hazard control, to hazard elimination. The session will discuss the use of administrative controls, personal protective equipment, fall protection, and fall arrest systems. Attendees will hear actual examples of workplace injuries and learn of best practices, training strategies, and available resources to improve worker safety.

“For a safety culture to be successful it needs to be led from the top.” - While this is a commonly accepted approach, is this truly the best way to build a good safety culture? After all, a culture is a set of shared values and beliefs, not just those of certain individuals. This presentation will focus on practices for building a safety culture where everyone is involved at every level of an organization.
