Society of Total Worker Health Launched to Improve Worker Health, Safety

Society of Total Worker Health Launched This Week

The new society focused on Total Worker Health was started by occupational safety and health leaders.

In 2011, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) launched Total Worker Health (TWH). This initiative focuses on the well-being of workers, not just their physical health and safety at work, and hinges on the idea “that work is a social determinant of health,” per NIOSH’s website. Now, a new society has been launched to continue improving TWH.

The Society of Total Worker Health, the new non-profit announced this week, will focus its efforts on improving the “growing” field of TWH, according to a press release. The Society hopes to be a place where professionals of many levels and industries can “enagage” and share new ideas to further TWH.

“The Society will bring together people from across disciplines to address complex challenges, learn from each other, and collectively solve big problems. The field of TWH is expanding rapidly and gaining momentum, increasing the need for a place to convene people who want to help shape our future,” L. Casey Chosewood, MD, MPH, Director of the Office for TWH at NIOSH said in the the press release.

The Society was started and will be lead by “leaders within NIOSH, NIOSH’s ten Centers of Excellence for TWH, and prominent occupational safety and health professional organizations,” according to the press release.
