BGE Fined Over $400,000 For Violations Related to 2019 Gas Explosion

In addition to paying the fine, the Baltimore Gas and Electric company will upgrade their gas lines to prevent other explosions from occurring.

The state of Maryland fined Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) more than $437,000 on Jan. 7 for safety violations that resulted in a 2019 gas explosion, according to The Baltimore Sun.

The Public Service Commission of Maryland (PSC) ordered BGE to pay two installments of $218,647 for its violation of electric and gas regulations. The fine must be paid within 15 business days. BGE must also follow a remediation plan to upgrade gas lines, which is estimated to cost $17 million.

“This work will ensure the safe and reliable operation of the BGE system so that an event like [this] does not happen again,” said BGE spokesman Aaron Koos.

The PSC accepted BGE’s proposed remediation plan, in which they will upgrade gas and electric lines in 1,253 buildings.
