FAA Out to Hire Air 1,400 Traffic Controllers
Developmental controllers are trained to control and separate live air traffic within designated airspace at and around an air traffic control tower, radar approach control facility, or air route traffic control center. New ATCs get their initial training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City.
The Federal Aviation Administration will be accepting applications Aug. 8-15 from entry-level candidates for air traffic controller positions, and the agency announced that it expects to get more than 25,000 applications for about 1,400 openings.
"We provide the safest, most efficient airspace system in the world, and we need exceptional people to support our mission," FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said. FAA currently employs more than 14,000 controllers.
The job vacancy announcement for the position of Air Traffic Control Specialist-Trainee will be available at USAJobs.gov, and those who are interested may establish an online account there now; FAA advises that this "is a highly competitive position," and applicants need to meet basic qualifications and answer specific questions for this position.
