NRC Discussing NY Nuclear Plant's Preparedness July 26

The agency is hosting an open house in Oswego, N.Y., to go over its annual review of the safety performance at Entergy's James A. FitzPatrick plant in Scriba, N.Y., which the company plans to shut down early next year.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced it will conduct an open house July 26 in Oswego, N.Y., to discuss its annual review of safety performance at the James A. FitzPatrick nuclear power plant in Scriba, N.Y. Entergy owns the plant and announced in February 2016 that it will shut it down on Jan. 27, 2017, and begin decommissioning the plant.

The meeting at the Town of Scriba Municipal Building, located at 42 Creamery Road in Oswego, is slated for 4:30-6 p.m. to discuss the plant's performance in 2015 and NSC oversight plans for the rest of 2016. Agency employees responsible for inspections of the plant, including inspectors there full time, will participate.

NRC determined that the FitzPatrick nuclear plant operated safely during 2015 and, as of the end of 2015, the plant had no inspection findings or performance indicators that were more than very low safety significance. During 2015, the agency devoted about 4,790 hours of review at FitzPatrick. "Our annual assessments allow us to step back at regular intervals, size up plant performance, and make any appropriate adjustments to our inspection plans. However, we view oversight of each facility as an ongoing responsibility," NRC Region I Administrator Dan Dorman said. "In the case of FitzPatrick, the plant's current performance qualifies for our normal level of oversight."

Among the areas to be inspected this year at FitzPatrick are radiological safety, in August and September, and emergency planning.
