Oregon OSHA Presents Memorial Scholarships

Established 20 years ago by state legislators, the Workers' Memorial Scholarship program aids students who are a dependent or spouse of an Oregon worker who was fatally injured or permanently disabled while on the job.

Oregon OSHA officials presented scholarships to seven students at a July 28 ceremony in Salem, Ore. These Workers' Memorial Scholarships awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year aid students who are a dependent or spouse of an Oregon worker who was fatally injured or permanently disabled while on the job.

One of the recipients elected to remain anonymous. The others and their scholarship amounts are:

  • Matthew Cecil, who is pursuing a career in business management at Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash., $1,000
  • Brittany Ford, who is studying to become a registered dietician at Oregon State University and had received two previous Workers' Memorial Scholarships, $1,000
  • William McLaughlin, who will attend Oregon State University this fall, $1,000
  • Marissa Parr, who is a pre-law student at Willamette University, $1,000
  • Zachary Prinz, who is pursing a business degree at the University of Miami, $250
  • Andrea Webb, who will attend Lane Community College this fall and plans to study nursing, $1,000

Money for the scholarships comes from a fund derived from OR-OSHA civil fines and penalties. Award recommendations are made by OR-OSHA's Safe Employment Education and Training Advisory Committee.

The program was created at the request of the Oregon AFL-CIO with support from Associated Oregon Industries. Any high school graduate, graduating high school senior, GED recipient, or current college undergraduate or graduate student who meets the eligibility requirement may apply.
