Session Spotlights Hearing Conservation, Ear Plug Fit Testing

Some of this year's 120 technical sessions at NSC's Congress in Orlando are more technical than others. It is the job of the presenters to share the information of the more technically involved workshops in such a way that attendees will derive the most from the time spent learning about the subject and, ideally, then be able to apply the insight and education at their workplaces to the benefit of their employees or coworkers. That is why Howard Leight/Sperian Hearing Protection LLC sent its leading hearing loss prevention experts, Director of Hearing Conservation Brad K. Witt and Hearing Conservation Manager Dr. Theresa Y. Schulz, to discuss the latest innovation in hearing conservation technology in a workshop that took place here yesterday afternoon.

Joined by Kevin Michael, president of Michael & Associates Inc., and moderator Jerry Elvin Rivera, director of safety for the National Electrical Contractors Association, Witt and Schulz presented "Hear Tomorrow: A Personalized Approach to Hearing Conservation." The session delved into the recent advances in ear plug fit testing and in-ear dosimetry and how the precise and personalized data derived from such measures are the key to a successful hearing conservation program. The experts detailed the newest hearing protection devices available and how they can help safety managers develop and refine their hearing safety efforts.

"The session's focus on new hearing loss prevention technologies is especially timely given the federal Environmental Protection Agency's current proposed rule changes regarding Noise Reduction Rating," said Schulz, Howard Leight's hearing conservation manager. "The proposed new rules will place even greater responsibility on safety managers to protect their employees against noise-induced hearing loss."
