Dollar General Issued More Citations, Proposed Penalties After Inspections in Florida, Alabama

The discount retailer’s new citations for repeat violations come just days after previous OSHA citations.

Discount retailer Dollar General has been cited once again, just days after OSHA announced citations and proposed penalties stemming from an inspection at an Ohio store.

The most recent citations from OSHA follow inspections at two stores in Florida and one in Alabama, where the agency found workers exposed to hazards similar to those identified at other locations.

According to a news release, an inspection in June 2022 revealed obstructed exit routes, generating fire and entrapment hazards, at a Dollar General store in Middleburg, Florida, and one in Green Cove Springs, Florida. In a Double Springs, Alabama, Dollar General, workers were exposed to struck-by hazards due to unsafely stacked boxes, OSHA found in July 2022.

Dollar General received citations for two repeat violations and proposed penalties of $196,438 following the inspections in Florida and citations for two repeat violations and proposed penalties of $205,117 for the Alabama store inspection.

“Dollar General’s growing record of disregard for safety measures makes it abundantly clear that the company puts profit before people,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Kurt Petermeyer in Atlanta in the news release. “These violations are preventable, and failing to prevent them shows a blatant disregard for the workers on whom they depend to keep their stores operating. OSHA continues to make every effort to hold Dollar General accountable for its failures.”

The discount retailer has been cited multiple times before. In 2022, OSHA found obstructed exit routes at several Dollar General stores, including in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. OSHA has proposed more than $15 million in penalties for the company since 2017.
