Two Women Honored with Marion Martin Award at 2022 NSC Safety

The two safety professionals recognized are Maude Taylor McGraw and Violet Marrero.

The National Safety Council (NSC) recently recognized two women safety professionals with the Marion Martin Award at the 2022 NSC Safety Congress & Expo. Both women are the first women of color to win the award.

The two women recognized for paving “the way to success for other women in the profession” are Maude Taylor McGraw and Violet Marrero, NSC said in a news release. Both women were honored at the opening session of the expo on Monday.

McGraw works at Cummins Inc. as the North America HSE regional operations leader. In her previous roles with Cummins, she “developed HSE professionals and improved safety performance” in countries like “Europe, India, China and Latin America.” Now, she works on HSE strategies “for more than 28,000 employees at 285 worksites in North America,” NSC said.

Before working at Cummins, McGraw worked at United Technologies-Carrier Corp. Per NSC, she reduced “the recordable injury rate from 9.2 (1999) to 0.39 (2007). She is a longstanding advocate for women and champion for diversity, equity and inclusion.”

The second person honored is Violet Marrero. Marrero works at NJM Insurance Group as the consumer safety director. As a leader, Marrero oversees the award-winning Teen Driver Safety Programs. “Under her leadership, NJM now collaborates with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Center for Injury Research and Prevention, Impact Teen Drivers and New Jersey Brain Injury Alliance Programs like What Do You Consider Lethal? and the Just Drive PSA Contest are now offered in high schools at no cost throughout Connecticut, Maryland, Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania,” NSC said. Before working at NJM Insurance Group, Marrero worked at the New Jersey Division of Highway Safety as the manager of special projects.

Marrero has been honored with multiple awards, “including the National Safety Council Award for Commitment to Advancing Teen Driver Safety,” per NSC.

“I am beyond thrilled NSC is honoring these two women with our Marion Martin Award,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC president and CEO in the news release. “This honor is designed to reward women who have had a significant impact on other women in the safety field and to celebrate the careers of women who have not only achieved professional excellence, but did so while encouraging other women to pursue a career in safety. These two women embody this feat fully. Thank you, and congratulations.”
