Governor's Lifesaving Awards Presented at Spokane Conference

The Sept. 26-27 conference was sponsored by the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Washington state Department of Labor & Industries.

Thirty workers in Washington state were honored Sept. 27 in Spokane, Wash., for reacting to emergencies and saving lives during their workdays. They received Governor's Lifesaving Awards at the annual Governor's Safety and Health Conference.

The Sept. 26-27 conference was sponsored by the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the state Department of Labor & Industries (L&I). It included safety demonstrations, workshops, and events such as the Annual Forklift Rodeo and the Annual Poletop Rescue Competition.

L&I reported that all of the honorees' stories are compelling. In one case, three Port of Tacoma patrol officers, along with a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer, responded when a woman climbed an overpass railing and appeared ready to jump onto a busy highway below. The four officers pulled the woman back to safety as she began to let go.

Two Department of Fish and Wildlife workers drove and then hiked to a remote area where a helicopter had crashed while the crew was tagging mule deer. The two workers rescued two seriously injured crew members.

The awards were scheduled to be presented by KXLY's "Good Morning Northwest" anchor Robyn Nance at a Sept. 27 noon luncheon at the Spokane Convention Center.
