Kentucky Agency's Site Visits Save Big on Safety Fines

Sixteen free on-site visits last month caused those employers to correct 123 serious violations that could have affected up to 4,873 employees and resulted in enforcement penalties of as much as $861,000.

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet reported this week that its personnel conducted 16 free on-site visits, called "consultative surveys," for employers across the state last month, and that because of those visits, the employers corrected 123 serious violations that could have affected up to 4,873 employees and resulted in enforcement penalties of as much as $861,000.

The Labor Cabinet's Division of Occupational Safety & Health Education & Training leads its efforts to create safe and healthful workplace conditions, including the free consultative surveys provided to employers in an effort to improve injury and illness rates. Employers who make use of the division's consultative surveys do not face penalties unless their violations are not corrected.

The agency says employers and employees all across Kentucky and the nation also have access to cost-free safety and health eLearning programs on the Labor Cabinet's eTrain website, and the division also offers cost-free OSHA training courses throughout the state. The Division also is responsible for overseeing the Partnership Programs and conducting the Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and the OSHA Data Collection.
