North Carolina DOT Hosting Drone Workshop Jan. 24

The Jan. 24 workshop in Gaston County will focus on the use of drones by public safety agencies such as police and fire departments, and it is open only to those in the public safety sector.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Division of Aviation will hold its first 2018 drone workshop on Jan. 24, continuing the series that included four free workshops in 2017 with more than 500 attendees participating. They saw live flight demonstrations and learned about drone flight operations, data management, and various applications for government and commercial users, as well as the latest changes in federal and state drone regulations.

The Jan. 24 workshop in Gaston County will focus on the use of drones by public safety agencies such as police and fire departments, and it is open only to those in the public safety sector.

"Drone technology is quickly advancing, and so are the possibilities for a business or government organization interested in using one," said Basil Yap, unmanned aircraft systems program manager for NCDOT. "The folks in attendance can expect to come away with a realistic understanding of the possible applications for drone technology and what it takes to effectively implement drones into their operations."

NCDOT's announcement said the agency "hopes to continue to use these workshops to show that this emerging technology can be safe and beneficial," and that locations and dates for other 2018 workshops are still being determined.
