NWS to Issue Snow Squall Warnings This Winter

The decision to use this warning was made because forecasters felt none of the warnings they have been using adequately warns people about this particular hazard.

The National Weather Service will begin issuing a new type of warning this winter for dangerous snow squalls. This type of warning will be issued for white-out conditions with visibility under a quarter mile, subfreezing road temperatures that will allow snow to build up rapidly, or dangerous and potentially life-threatening travel conditions.

The decision to use this warning was made because forecasters felt none of the warnings they have been using adequately warns people about this particular hazard.

They will be issued in the same way that a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning is issued.
