ASSE Foundation Awards Scholarships to 116 Students

The foundation awarded $281,750 in scholarships to 90 students pursuing OSH degrees at 48 universities plus $21,915 in professional education grants to 26 ASSE members seeking to further their safety credentials.

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation announced it is celebrating a record year by awarding more than $303,000 in scholarships and grants to 116 students and members. The foundation awarded $281,750 in scholarships to 90 students pursuing OSH degrees at 48 universities plus $21,915 in professional education grants to 26 ASSE members seeking to further their safety credentials.

"The foundation thanks the ASSE community for its generous display of support," said its chair, Darryl C. Hill, Ph.D., CSP, who was ASSE's president in 2010-2011. "Thanks to our donors, we were able to increase scholarship and grant funding by 10 percent in 2017. We are proud to be able to help so many pursue their dreams of higher education in occupational safety and health."

This year's total distribution exceeds the foundation's previous record last year of $275,000 in scholarships and grants. A complete list of the 2017 recipients can be found at http://foundation.asse.org/scholarship-and-grants-recipients/2017/.

Scholarship applications are open to students earning OSH degrees who have completed at least 60 hours of safety-related coursework with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and grant applications are open to anyone seeking additional professional education in the safety field. "We do this because safety matters," Hill explained. "We want to play a key role in developing tomorrow's occupational safety leaders while supporting research that expands the knowledge of the safety community. It's only because of the generosity of our partners that we can provide such valuable resources."

Longtime corporate donors supporting the scholarship program include Fabenco, ISNetworld, Liberty Mutual, Parsons, ProcessMAP, SafeStart, Southern Company, Texas Safety Foundation, UPS, and WorkCare, and as a new contributor this year is United Rentals. The foundation's Impact Scholarships, which range from $10,000 to $15,000, are sponsored by Applications International Corporation, BCSP, and Bechtel Corporation.
