Council Presents Campbell, Distinguished Service to Safety Awards

ATLANTA -- Monday's opening ceremony at the 2015 National Safety Council Congress & Expo included welcoming remarks from Council President and CEO Deborah Hersman, outgoing board Chair Jeffrey Woodbury, and incoming board Chair John Surma. The ceremony also included recognition of winners of top 2015 awards from the council, including the Robert W. Campbell Award.

Honeywell Aerospace won the Campbell Award in 2015. The company was recognized for integrating health, safety, and environmental considerations into all aspects of its global business and achieving sustained excellence in EHS.

Six people were recognized as 2015 Distinguished Service to Safety Award winners for demonstrating outstanding career achievements in safety and health; first presented in 1954, it is the highest individual honor bestowed by the council.

The six are:

  • Construction Division: Julie Ann Carter, MS, CSP, CHST, director of environmental safety & health, Roy Anderson Corporation
  • Transportation Division: Michael Cobb, vice president, safety and compliance, Landstar Transportation Logistics, Inc.
  • Labor Division: Mark Johnson, safety and health director, TWU Local 513
  • Transportation Division: Joseph M. Mokristy, president, Capitol Motor Carrier Compliance
  • Business & Industry Division: Michael J. Wahl, store director, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
  • Campbell Institute: Rich Widdowson, past vice president of safety & environment, Schneider-Electri

Hersman was an National Transportation Safety Board member for a decade, including serving as its chair, prior to joining the council last year. Her remarks touched on the difficulty of spotting safety problems before they turn into incidents. "We safety, too often, we only have that 20/20 vision after the incident," she explained. "The challenge is to get others to have the same 20/20 vision."
