OSHA Cites R.R. Dawson Bridge Co. Following Worker Fatalities

The citations come after two workers died in falls.

Following the deaths of two workers who fell approximately 90 feet while working on the construction of the I-85 interchange Outer Loop overpass in Montgomery, Ala., OSHA has cited R.R. Dawson Bridge Co. LLC and filed four violations following its investigation of the fatalities earlier this year.

"Falls continue to be the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry," said Joseph Roesler, OSHA's area director in Mobile, in a statement. "OSHA will continue to enforce fall protection requirements aggressively to reduce deaths."

A willful violation was issued by OSHA for failing to provide employees working near the bridge's edge with required fall protection. Three serious violations were issued for exposing workers to fall hazards and for failing to inspect employee fall arrest systems before use.

In total, the proposed penalties for R.R. Dawson Bridge Co. amount to $54,500.
