Italian Authorities Weigh Plan to Scrap Costa Concordia in Genoa

Franco Gabrielli, commissioner for the Concordia Emergency, is analyzing Costa Crociere’s plan to move the cruise ship from Giglio Island to the port of Genoa, a trip of about 170 miles.

The companies that are preparing to move the damaged cruise ship Costa Concordia reported that a meeting took place recently in Rome with Franco Gabriella, commissioner for the Concordia Emergency, chairing it. Gabrielli is analyzing the plan by Costa Crociere to move the ship from the coast of Giglio Island to the port of Genoa for dismantling there.

The decision deadline was June 16, but public authorities asked for more documents, and Gabrielli will ask for 10 additional days to consider the plan, according to the report.

"The administrations involved –- Isola del Giglio Municipality, Grosseto Province and Toscana Region, Regional Tuscan environmental agency (Arpat), Grosseto health authorities, Genoa Municipality and Province, Liguria Region, Liguria Region environmental agency (Arpal), Genoa Port Authority, Ministries of Interior, Environment, Infrastructure and Transportation, Health, Culture, Ispra, Superior Institute of Health, Frontiers Agency -– have all expressed the need to have additional time to analyze the project in detail, especially with regards to risk assessments and proposed mitigation measures," it stated.

The next meeting will be June 16. Operations at the ship are continuing around the clock, with four sponsors yet to be positioned on the starboard side and four more on the port side, to reach the total of 30 that are needed to refloat the wreck.
