Mayo Clinic to Continue Saint Marys Hospital Expansion

Five floors, three housing a total of 69 patient care units, will be added to the Mary Brigh East Building, the organization announced Dec. 2.

The Mayo Clinic announced it will add five more floors to the Mary Brigh East Building at its Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., with three of them dedicated to patient care rooms. Ceiling lifts will be installed, the 69 rooms will have private bathrooms and showers, and each room will offer sufficient space for family members to stay overnight, according to the organization's Dec. 2 announcement. These are replacing a total of 73 inpatient beds in an older, outdated building that will be used for hospital-based staff clinical support space.

Along with the renovation of a floor in another building, the work will cost $72.1 million and is expected to be completed in early 2016. "Hospitals are the location where care is delivered to the most complex and seriously ill patients," said Dr. Amy Williams, M.D., medical director of hospital operations. "Patient safety is of the utmost concern in the hospital setting, and this project will meet the needs of the patient by creating a safe and welcoming environment that is patient and family focused."

Construction of the initial four floors of the Mary Brigh East building is "finishing up," according to the announcement, which said those four floors are part of a surgery expansion project to create a new post anesthesia care unit.
