New Zealand Seminar Explores Workplace Safety

Victoria University hosted a day-long seminar about the country's new workplace health and safety climate.

The School of Law and the Industrial Relations Center at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand hosted a Sept. 3 seminar titled "Creating a Safety Climate in New Zealand – Moving Beyond Pike River and the Taskforce Report." The seminar was designed to investigate and explore future workplace health and safety, according to Scoop Independent News.

The seminar featured debates and forums meant to discuss how New Zealand can improve its workplace safety climate, drawing upon suggestions that were made by the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety in April 2013. Speakers included policy makers, workplace managers, unions, and others.

The forum focused on a variety of specific topics, including regulation, the new agency for workplace safety, the importance of worker participation, motivating change in the workplace, increasing workplace knowledge of health and safety, and providing successful incentives. It was prompted in part by the Pike River Coal Mine disaster in 2010 in which several explosions left 29 miners dead.
