EASA Welcomes New Executive Director

Patrick Ky took over Sept. 1 as executive director of the European Aviation Safety Agency.

Patrick Ky is the new executive director of the European Aviation Safety Agency. Ky started his new assignment Sept. 1 at EASA, which is based in Koeln, Germany.

The main tasks of EASA include drafting aviation safety legislation and providing technical advice to the European Commission and to Member States; inspections, training, and standardization programs to ensure uniform implementation of European aviation safety legislation in all Member States; and safety and environmental type-certification of aircraft, engines, and parts.

Before joining EASA, Ky was executive director of SESAR -– the Single European Sky ATM Research program – and, prior to that, he held management positions in the French Civil Aviation Authority and Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation.

He is a graduate of the École Polytechnique and the Civil Aviation Engineering School in France, with economics degrees from the University of Toulouse and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
