MI5 Seeking EHS Chief

Britain’s national security intelligence agency has posted the job, saying it pays up to $92,328 per year in U.S. dollars.

British newspapers are having some fun with a job opening posted by MI5, the country's national security intelligence agency, for a new head of health and safety. They're practically posting the ad verbatim.

As you'd expect, the posting is short on key details.

"Salary depending on skills and experience. London based with some UK travel.

  • "We can't show you the buildings.
  • "We can't talk about the people you'll work with.
  • "We can't tell you much about the job.
  • "We can't give you the exact locations.
  • "We can't mention the kind of technology involved.

"Is it still a risk worth taking? What we can tell you is that whatever your role at MI5 you'll be contributing to protecting the UK from threats to national security including terrorism and espionage," the posting states. It says the position pays as much as $92,328 per year, and the deadline for applications is Sept. 4.

This is MI5's crest."Like other large organisations, at MI5 we use a variety of equipment to carry out our work, except here our work is often covert and our equipment classified. That can raise interesting challenges when it comes to health and safety," it says. "As the Head of Health and Safety you'll have overall responsibility for the implementation, review and development of our health and safety management system from structure and procedures to policies, audit and review, and from accident and incident investigation to employee consultation. Experience of working at the strategic level and the ability to maintain a corporate overview will be crucial."

Key details: "Advising on health and safety at a strategic level and investigating workplace incidents is vital. As is a NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent NVQ Level 4/5 qualification, in Health and Safety Practice. For the Head of Health and Safety role you must be CMIOSH." A full UK driver's license also is required. Oh, also this: To be eligible to apply, you must a born or naturalized British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK, according to the posting, and candidates "must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last 10 years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. However, we will still consider you if you've served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty's Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents."
