ASSEF, Henshaw Unveil Scholarship for Families of Workplace Fatality Victims

LAS VEGAS -- Former OSHA chief John Henshaw and the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation announced the new Family Scholarship Fund during the Safety 2013 conference. The scholarships will assist families affected by a fatal workplace incident and will encourage continuing education.

“There are so many things a family needs after losing a loved one. But one of the most crucial elements of long-term stability in any person’s life is access to a good education,” Henshaw said during the June 25 opening general session Tuesday.

ASSE reports Henshaw has made the Family Scholarship Fund his primary initiative and has personally contributed $10,000. Both ASSE and the foundation have matched his gift, for a total of $30,000 to go toward the scholarships. The inaugural award will be made this fall. The goal is to raise $1 million by June 2015.

“We cannot bring back the lives lost, but we can do our part to ease the loss,” Henshaw said.
