Indonesian Mine Closed for Cave-In Investigation
Twenty-eight workers were killed in a cave-in at the gold and copper mine last month.
An Indonesian mine in the province of Papua has been ordered to cease operations while the cause of a fatal tunnel collapse is being investigated. The May 14 cave-in at Freeport-McMoRan's gold and copper Grasberg mine killed 28 of 38 employees who were undergoing safety training.
Immediately after the cave-in, the mine closed for two weeks. After reopening, state officials ordered mining processes to halt and only administrative and maintenance activities could proceed, according to an ABC News report.
Another worker was killed Friday in an unrelated accident when a truck he was driving underground was engulfed in a tide of muddy ore materials.
It is estimated the investigation into the mine could take two months or longer.
