Chinese Poultry Plant Fire Kills 119 Employees

According to a Chinese newspaper, only one door at the facility was unlocked.

More than 100 workers at a poultry processing plant in northeastern China died June 3 when a fire broke out. According to a Chinese newspaper, only one door in the whole facility was unlocked.

About 300 people were inside the building. Media reports said an estimated 119 employees died in the plant, which had complex interiors and narrow exits that made escape and subsequent rescue from the building difficult.

According to Chinese labor officials, improvements have been made in recent years to workplace safety. Two years ago, annual employee deaths dropped below 10,000 in mining and industrial sectors for the first time.
