ISO Offering Food Safety Handbook

How to use ISO 22000 will help small and medium-sized businesses implement a robust food safety management system, according to the organization.

Food safety ranks high on the list of concerns for consumers, regulators, producers, and retailers, as shown by The ISO Survey of Management System Standard Certifications -- 2011, which recorded at least 19,980 ISO 22000:2005 certificates in 140 countries, 8 percent more than a year earlier. With that in mind, ISO now is offering "How to use ISO 22000," a handbook to help small and medium-sized enterprises that may be hampered by their size or lack of in-house technical expertise when it comes to deploying a food safety management system.

The 125-page handbook provides practical information for developing, documenting, implementing, and maintaining a robust food safety management system according to ISO 22000:2005, Food safety management systems -- Requirements for any organization in the food chain.

The book was conceived by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 34/SC 17, Management systems for food safety. It explains the implementation and certification processes, helping businesses improve their in-house procedures and better manage risks.
