Ford, GM Work toward Improved Transmissions
The two automakers are collaborating on a 10-speed transmission that will increase fuel efficiency and lower costs.
Ford Motor and General Motors have joined forces to improve transmissions that will be place in millions of future vehicles. These 10-speed automatic transmissions should increase fuel economy and heighten vehicle performance.
Due to the complexity and expense of this project, the two companies will split the cost of the endeavor, saving both companies hundreds of millions of dollars.
While the developmental process has already begun, the timeline for project completion has not been given. The transmissions have the potential to increase gas mileage, engine efficiency, and vehicle performance.
This isn't the first collaboration for the companies. About a decade ago, Ford and GM teamed up to develop the first 6-speed transmissions, the transmissions utilized by a majority of vehicles today. Some luxury vehicles have seven- or eight-speed transmissions.
