Food Safety Modernization Act a Hot Topic at GMA Conference

The agenda of the 2013 GMA Science Forum next month in Washington, D.C., is filled with FSMA workshops.

Complying with the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act is a top issue for food industry participants, and the Grocery Manufacturers Association's 2013 Science Forum has been planned with a variety of sessions to answer questions about the new law, which was signed in January 2011 and is still being implemented. FDA issued one of the five proposed rules to implement it, a rule to set science-based standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding produce on domestic and foreign farms, on Jan. 4, 2013.

The GMA meeting will take place April 1-5 at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel. It includes an April 3 lunch keynote speech by Michael Taylor, FDA’s deputy commissioner for Foods, and a session focused on the complexity of the global food chain as participants cope with the FSMA.

Experts will discuss which records and documents FDA has legal access to, good recordkeeping practices, and what importers and their supply chain partners need to know to comply with the law.
