Symposium to Examine Hurricane Sandy's Lessons
The New York City Fire Department and the FDNY Foundation are presenting the symposium March 14-15.
The FDNY 2013 Symposium taking place next week will show attendees how the New York City Fire Department planned for Hurricane Sandy last year, operated during the storm, and mitigated destruction afterward.
The organizers promise to provide an in-depth examination of emergency personnel responses and operations, including pre-staging of fire department equipment and resources, Incident Management Team functions in planning for and interacting with all city agencies to help coordinate the response, and Chief Robert Maynes describing the challenges from flooding and fires. EMS Command operations involving mass evacuations of hospitals and other facilities also will be covered.
The second day will be a full day of lectures presented at the FDNY fire academy. Proceeds from the symposium benefit the foundation, which is the official not-for-profit of the FDNY established to promote fire safety in the city and to help fund the professional development, training, and education of members.
