Deputy Now Serving as Acting U.S. Labor Secretary

Seth Harris, a former law professor, has been serving as deputy secretary since May 2009.

Seth D. Harris, the U.S. Department of Labor's deputy secretary since May 2009, is now serving as acting secretary of Labor, following the resignation of Secretary Hilda Solis.

DOL reported that Harris sent a email to departmental employees Jan. 24. "Our goals in the department are stability and continuity as we wait for a Secretary of Labor to be nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate," he wrote, adding that "our mission has never been more important than it is today. Let's work together to carry it out, to help the people and organizations that depend on us, and to continue rebuilding America's economy."

Prior to joining DOL, Harris was a professor of law at New York Law School and director of its Labor & Employment Law Programs.
