Symposium Features Separate Detection, Suppression Programs
The Fire Protection Research Foundation's upcoming SupDet 2013 in Orlando will include a presentation on fast detection of deflagrations using image processing.
NFPA's Fire Protection Research Foundation will present its annual Suppression, Detection and Signaling Research and Applications Symposium for the 17th time Feb. 26 through March 1, giving professionals in the fire alarm, suppression, and emergency communications industries a look at the latest research in these important areas.
SupDet 2013 will take place at the Doubletree Orlando at SeaWorld in Orlando, Fla. Attendees have the option to choose between the "Detection and Signaling Program" and the "Suppression Program," with each program featuring a keynote address and about a dozen presentations.
A highlight of the detection program (Feb. 26-27) will be Session I, with two papers on detection technology research. One of them is titled "Fast Detection of Deflagrations Using Image Processing" and will be presented by Thomas Schroeder and Klaus Krueger of Helmut Schmidt University's Institute of Automation Technology (Hamburg, Germany) and Felix Kuemmerlen of the Bundeswehr Research Institute for Protective Technologies and NBC Protection, part of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defense.
Deflagrations are involved in dust explosions and can occur if four conditions are present at the same time: deflagrable particulate, in suspension, in sufficient concentration within a confining enclosure, and an igniter is introduced.
The foundation promises the two programs will offer these:
- The latest in detection research, including cooking fire detection research, a new strategy to address the unwanted alarm issue, and detection of wildland fires.
- The latest in sprinkler protection strategies, including lithium ion batteries and other high-hazard challenges.
- The latest in clean agent technology research, including a case study on a Halon replacement system at a military jet engine test facility.
